The Power of Culture in “Everyday Use”

Abstract

Alice Walker is a famous black American woman writer, and she is also the first black woman who has received the Pulitzer Prize. From Walker’s works, we can get her deep concern about the construction of the harmonious and equal relationship between the blacks and the whites, between men and women, the relationship among the blacks, and the value of women, what’s more, the way to view the culture heritage. We can also read out the anxiety about how the African Americans survive through the culture oppression. In “Everyday Use”, there are two kinds of oppressions: the institutionalized oppression, and the internalized oppression. These oppressions have caused Mama and Maggie’s low self-esteem and Dee’s unhomeliness. Dee will be forever unhomed, while Mama and Maggie find their way for survival through their deep understanding of their culture and their sense of culture belonging.

Key Words: the white culture; black American culture; culture oppression; culture belonging; unhomeliness
