语音是口语能力的重要基础。发音准确与否直接影响语意的准确表达与及时沟通。流利、准确的发音也是口齿伶俐、说话清晰的基本要求。许多英语学习者，由于受母语以及方言等种种原因的影响，往往在发音方面出现单音不到位、音素混淆、辅音连缀把握不好等现象。而传统的语音教学存在一定的局限性：教学素材方面大多是以供单音训练的单词为主，短语、句子类素材不多，而且所提供的素材中既定训练音素出现频率不是很高；教学方法通常是提供发音器官图，讲解发音要领，要求学生练习口形，根据录音模仿发音。传统的'语音教学虽然在一定程度上对学生习得英语发音有帮助，但从学习心理的角度来看却往往显得枯燥、单调和乏味。其主要的原因在于既定训练项目出现的频率低以及相应的语境缺失。绕口令最突出的功能就是矫正发音、训练口齿伶俐。对于英语教学而言，编排适当的绕口令是一种练习发音、富有趣味而且很有效的练习材料。绕口令可以用来训练单音、对比音素、音素综合训练以及节奏感训练。
单音强化。含有既定单音音素的绕口令，是指某个拟训练音素多次、反复地出现在一个或几个句子中，通过使用这类绕口令，学生可以在朗读过程中反复检查自己的口型，使口腔习惯于该音的准确位置。借助此类绕口令训练，学生若再次碰到此音，口腔便会很快滑到发音的准确位置。此谓单音强化绕口令练习。我们认为，教师在告知学习者某个音素的发音要领以及进行了简要的单词、短语层面的集训之后，就可以采用句子以及超句层面的绕口令来帮助学习者在有意义的语境中强化音素：
（1）元音强化。例1：I like to ride my light white bike and fly a white light kite with my wife by the riverside under the moonlight at night．我喜欢在晚上月光下沿河边和我妻子一边骑着那辆白色的轻型车一边放着白色的轻风筝。
在一个25词的绕口令中，［ai］音出现频率为17次；此外，该句还提供了一个月影婆娑的情境：人、物、景交融，有利于学生基于意象诵读语句。
（2）辅音强化。例2： Jenny and Jimmy went to Jamaica and Germany in January, but Joan and John went to Jordan and Japan in June and July. 詹妮和吉米于一月去了牙买加和德国，而琼和约翰在六月和七月去了约旦和日本。
该句描述了四人在不同月份到不同国家。而在这个由23词组成的绕口令中，［d?廾］音出现频率为11次，可以反复训练学生对该发音在语流中的掌握。
（3）辅音连缀。例3：A pleasant place to place a plaice is a place where a plaice is pleased to be placed. 适合置放鲽（一种有红斑的比目鱼）的地方是鲽愿意被放置的地方。
